Fiona Joy Hawkins Releases When Shadows Talk — A Piano Storybook in Keys and Emotion

A heartfelt solo piano journey into reflection, storytelling, and the beauty of sound.

There are albums you listen to — and there are albums you experience. When Shadows Talk, the latest solo piano work from classically-trained Australian pianist Fiona Joy Hawkins, is firmly in the latter category.

This is more than music. It’s a piano storybook — a collection of tales told through keys and emotion, where spirit and melody intertwine to take listeners on a journey deep into memory, spirituality, nature, and human connection.

A Creative Journey in Self-Reflection

To bring When Shadows Talk to life, Fiona went into a self-imposed creative exile. Away from the noise of everyday life, she dug into the deeper, quieter spaces within herself. The result is an album that’s both intimate and expansive, personal yet universally resonant.

"This exile allowed me to explore what lies deep beneath the surface and is often passed over or suppressed, both personally and in the context of broader community discussion,” she shares.

The music was performed and recorded on a rare 97-key Stuart & Sons grand piano, giving the album a depth and tonal range rarely heard in contemporary recordings.

Critical Praise and Thoughtful Details

Since its release, When Shadows Talk has drawn heartfelt praise from music reviewers around the world. Music writer Robin James describes it as “Each track is a story, a place, or a dream, expressing delicately unfolding themes of memory, spirituality, nature, and human emotion. Hawkins weaves a sonic tapestry that’s both intimate and refreshing.”

New Age Notes found hidden meaning even in the album’s finer details. One example, they note, is that the contemplative track "In The Deep" runs exactly 2:22 — a nod, perhaps, to the angel number 222, which symbolizes balance, harmony, and faith.

From the playful lullaby "The Mirror" — a tribute to angelic reflections — to the haunting imagery in "The Ghosts of War Are Marching," every track feels like a glimpse into a moment, a dream, or a truth waiting to be uncovered.

An Artist with Global Reach and Heart

Fiona Joy Hawkins is no stranger to the global stage. Influenced by classical greats like Chopin and Mendelssohn, her career has taken her from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, the Grammy Museum, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, and concert halls across China.

Her music has been featured on a GRAMMY®-winning album, and she is an IMA winner and ARIA-nominated artist with an international fanbase. Despite these accolades, she remains deeply committed to her mission: to create music that uplifts, soothes, and connects people across cultures and experiences.

My greatest hope is that my music makes a difference,” she says — a sentiment that resonates in every note of When Shadows Talk.
