A: Read, read, read. One can find hordes of valuable information on the Internet at sites like www.riaa.com, www.artistdirect.co www.pollstar.com, www.narip.com, et cetera. Also sign up for regular industry newsletters and publications such as those from "Hits", "Billboard" or The B Company. Or, take B. to lunch and she'll give you a full reading list. Q: As an artist, how can I find sponsorship? Again, lots of reading, and understanding the goals of the brands with which you want to align yourself. Showing a willingnes s to really work the sponsorship toward reaching those goals goes a long way! Q: What is the timing on planning a music-based marketing campaign? The answer really depends on the elements you'd like to incorporate. I've begun discussing major retail campaigns 1.5 years out, but turned street campaigns around in a day. Experience will teach you the particular timing needed for each element; until then, ask fa r in advance! Q: What are the various elements of music marketing? Our "tool kit" is extensive; we explore all the potential integrations upfront, such as complementing a tour sponsorship with artist appearances at client events, custom CD products, the use of music in ad beds, and fan base e-blasts, among many other things. Q: How do I know I'm getting strong ROI with a music campaign? While music marketing is becoming more measurable all the time, it is still virtually impossible to put a dollar value on the true strength of aligning with an artist. Knowing what appeals to your brand audience, trusting that the artist's team knows their audience, a nd forging a positive win-win partnership is the best approach to getting the most out of your campaign. Q: How can I simplify working with music marketing? When moving into the execution phase of an event or promotion, request a single point person to coordinate the various divisio ns that will be involved delivering on all the promotional elements. A truly integrated promotion can include six or more people on the ar tist's side, and several agency contacts on the brand side…far too many parties for you to wrangle on your own! That's where B comes in! Q: Music is best to reach teens, right? Not necessarily. Music is a universal language and can be effective in every demo and genre, with global reach. It also expe riences trend cycles over time…particularly under utilized in marketing right now are R&B, jazz, new age and world music. Music is a fun, but specialized, industry…seek the assistance of a specialist if you can!
